I've been a huge Gretsch fan for years and until the Renown series, was unable to afford a set. So i found a barely used renown set on e-bay and purchased it.
Right away i had trouble finding a good consistent sound. Found them really high maintenance from room to room.(they sounded like what a lot of people here described them...pancakey) So i did some homework and concluded that it had to be the Evans G1's that were the culprit. So i thought i'd try evans' hydraulic skins, they'd make any drum sound ok, so i thought. Now i'm onto G2's.
Putting the new heads on, i thought i'd check out the roundness and bearing edges of my 10 and 12" toms.
Using some simple methods i've read here on this board, i found both drums are slightly out of round and not so perfectin the bearing edges (placed the tom on the counter and shone a flashlight inside the shell and i could see light through the outside bottom of the shell except for the 2 higher areas which sat on the counter top, i was hoping i had a counter top problem but the same resulted everywhere i tested) [img]frown.gif[/img]
With the new G2's; however, the sound is really alive and so far i love the sound (in my living room that is). Only problem is i won't truely know until i can set up my kit and see for sure, i'm keeping my finger's crossed!!!
While tuning the 2 toms i did notice a lot of rattling coming from my tension knobs. So i painstankingly took each of them off the drum, took each one apart and stuffed them full of paper towel to reduce the rattling of the part that the tension screw screws into which was rattling up against its housing unit. (forgive my lack of technical terms,I am slowly learning)
This didn't completely rid the rattling, but did reduce it a lot.
I was planning on saving up for a USA maple kit, but highly doubt it now from reading the above posts and from my personal experience.
Maybe i'll trade them in for Yamahas, or maybe some new "Conway, AK" Slingerlands.

Hey, Manicoti, I think someone on this forum (it might have been Randy) said that Vinnie gets his edges on his Gretsch's recut by the guy at Pork Pie Percussion. Randy might have said that he had the same done with his (if my memory serves me correctly).
I have stuffed my lug casings with cotton and had no rattles. Also, using rubber tubing to replace the springs in the casings has been done as well.
I have also found that double ply heads are a bit more forgiving to bad edges and out of round drums. I like 'em because they focus the tone a bit more and I can get a thicker sound from them.

I would have the edges looked at. Have someone take a caliper to see if they infact are out of round.
Not sure where you are in Canada, but a guy like Paul Mason (tempus drums) might be able to help you or Ronn Dunnett (Dunnett drums). Both of these guys make killer drums and are in Canada.

For now i think i'll just wait and see how the next few gigs go sound wise. I'm planning on waiting a year or so and trading up. I only paid around $800 for them and would rather keep my money for a higher end kit with the finish i'd be more happy with. This kit has a laquered charcoal finish which is really nice, but i really dig the satin rosewood look. Right now i'm hopeful these G2's will do the trick.
